There is something so magical about a simple black dress and all the things you can add to it to transform an outfit. Through the years I have found it to be an absolute necessity when it comes to building the foundations of my wardrobe.
So today I am taking a beautiful Tencel Rib Knit Maxi Slip Dress from Quince (a Skims maxi dress dupe that is slightly more budget-friendly) and styling it in three ways with many of the same pieces to show its versatility.
Outfit #1: Maxi Dress + Belted Blazer + Heels + Shoulder Bag

For the first look, I wanted to style it a little more dressy and sophisticated. I opted for a belted blazer which I kept shut, minimalist heels, and a minimal shoulder bag that I wore in every outfit.
Since body-skimming dresses are not my usual go-to when it comes to dresses I liked playing with an extra layer so I could still play with the shape of the dress and feel at home in my outfit as well.
Quick styling note: The blazer I am wearing in this outfit is sold out, but the one I linked has a very similar oversized boxy shape and you could get the same effect as my belted one with a thin nude leather belt, or a thin leather black belt.

#2 Maxi Dress + Cropped Poplin Top + Sneakers + Shoulder Bag

Swapping out the blazer for a cropped poplin top and the heels for sneakers gave this dress a more casual but still elevated spin. I also just love the way this cropped poplin hits at the top of the hip creating a beautiful line.
Now let’s talk Sambas, they come back into stock at random, but are currently sold out and can be difficult to find! So I was elated when I found a site that is currently carrying them, ships out immediately, and is a reliable source that I have purchased from many times. They are just listed at different prices based on the value of each size currently. So if you have been waiting to get your hands on a pair, they are in stock here for slightly above the original value of the shoe. A note on sizing – I would take your true size, and make sure to note they are listed in mens sizing. So order a full size down – I take a men’s 6.5 which translates to a woman’s 7.5.

#3 Maxi Dress + Belted Blazer + Sneakers + Cap + Shoulder Bag

We are back with the belted blazer in this last outfit but this time I kept it open and paired it with sneakers and a ball cap. I LOVE this look because it incorporates 3 of my favorite things right now, sneakers, oversized blazers, and sporty hats.
It’s always amazing to me how something as simple as a hat and opening up a blazer can change the way an outfit looks and feels. I love to focus on this idea when it comes to my wardrobe because it extends the use I get out of the items I own.
