Shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale with purpose

07.20.19Style How To's, Summer Outfits4

If you know anything about me then you know I’m all about shopping with purpose!

So with the Nordstrom Anniversary sale being here, I decided to approach it with that in mind – putting together 5 outfits that I would ideally love to have in my wardrobe and think would be a great addition to any closet.

It’s funny because I used to have an unhealthy relationship with sales where I would just buy something because it was cute or even just because it was on sale but overtime that built a confusing wardrobe.

Now though, I view sales as an opportunity to add to my wardrobe with the goals I have and as a way to be savvy and responsible with money. It’s also a way to play with concepts I’m drawn to for a fraction of the cost – because fashion is art and it should be fun… am I right?!

So to keep myself focused when shopping sales I:

  1. Only buy what I love and feel amazing in
  2. Go in with a rough list of things that will add to my wardrobe to stay focused
  3. Ask myself: Would I want this if it wasn’t on sale? And: Do I have something in my wardrobe that is similar to this already? And: Can I visualize what to wear this with?

The last two questions are great to ask even if you aren’t shopping a sale as well because I’ve found that two of the top reasons clothes do not get worn in my closet is because:

  1. I have too many similar things so I never get around to wearing the new thing, or
  2. I never finished putting together an outfit, and I actually needed something else to create it just how I was envisioning it

So if you’re ready, let’s dive into my 5 outfit’s and shop the sale with purpose. Also, I’m so excited to share with that you can now shop my affiliate links and support The Threads We Wear if you see something you like!

And if it’s not your style, the concepts below are still a great guideline – just insert your own flavor!

Let’s jump in!

#1 put-together lounge look

I’ve found that oftentimes our lounge around clothes are the last clothes to get updated in our closets and that definitely was the case in my client’s wardrobes when I used to style and has been in mine as well. But since our house is where we spend so much time resting and recharging I’ve always thought it should be a place we feel good about ourselves in!

Sweatshirt:

Champion Crop Sweatshirt $40.90 ($55 after sale)

Athletic Short:

Champion Athletic Shorts $25.90 ($30 after sale)

#2 styled workout look

The same concept as above here… working out is an act of self-love so I believe having a cool outfit that you feel good in, sends a message to yourself that you are doing good things for yourself and that working out is positive. Better to have fewer things that go together than a bunch that you just feel meh in – don’t you agree?

Crop Top:

Nike Crop Tee $19 ($30 after sale)

Athletic Leggings:

Zella High-Wasted Leggings $38.90 ($59 after sale)

Athletic Shoes:

Nike Training Shoe $74.90 ($100)

#3 casual street look

I am all about an outfit that involves well-styled sportswear or graphic tee with a pair of jeans and a cool shoe or bag. I think it’s one thing to just put on a t-shirt and jeans, but when you take some time to put together a look you’re not only comfortable in but you also feel cool in, you will go back to this feeling over and over again!

Sweatshirt:

Champion Cropped Sweater $40.90 ($55 after sale)

Denim:

BlankNYC Straight Leg Crop Jeans $64.90 ($98 after sale)

Bag:

Rebecca Minkoff Leather Belt Bag $129.90 ($198 after sale)

#4 freshened date night look

Freshening up on date night looks is so much fun for me, I even at times like to save items (as a surprise) to wear on a date with my hus. To me, it sends the mental message to both yourself and the person you care about that they are special and that time with them is special… such an invaluable mood to create.

Blouse:

J.Crew Leopard Print Wrap Top $45.90 ($69.50 after sale)

Denim:

Topshop High Waist Split Hem Straight Leg Jeans $52.90 ($80 after sale)

Sandals:

Karl Lagerfeld Kitten Heel Sandal $69.90 ($108.95 after sale)

#5 ready-to-go special occasion

I don’t know about you, but I always get myself in situations where I don’t have time to find the right semi-formal look because sometimes they will come up out of the blue. So when sales come a knocking I’ve found it’s a great time to invest in an emergency special occasion look so that you are not stuck in a situation without something to wear. And something like a black midi is so versatile that it could be worn to a lot of different types of occasions.

Dress:

Topshop Belted V-Neck Long Sleeve Midi Dress $62.90 ($95 after sale)

Heels:

Vince Camuto Snake Skin Heels $84.90 ($129.95 after sale)

Bag:

Kate Spade Chain Wallet Crossbody Bag $131.90 ($198 after sale)

—

So that’s a wrap on my 5 outfit ideas and picks from the sale, and though I do wish I could add all of these pieces to my wardrobe I stuck to just a couple to stay within my budget!

Hope you enjoyed these concepts and feel excited to shop with purpose yourself, and if you see something you like and it’s out of stock, check again in a couple of days because they usually come back!

So much love,

Mary Beth
