The Trimm Challenge

The Trimm Challenge is a simple and abbreviated seasonal wardrobe edit that I have developed from my days as a personal stylist. The heart behind it is that having good style and direction in your wardrobe starts with subtracting things out of your closet first, before ever adding anything in. Clothes we don’t like and never wear have this great ability to clutter our decision making when it comes to styling and purchasing. And most of all, it makes it easier to buy more things in the future that really don’t align with what we love or who we are!

So here are the main goals:

  • get rid of a small but specific number of items in your wardrobe before the start of each season
  • discover what you really need or want to add in
  • give yourself guidelines on what you won’t be purchasing
  • and most importantly create a few style descriptors that will guide your outfits overall

5 steps to Trimm:

  1. One Saturday a season go into your wardrobe and pick out 10 items that just don’t do it for you anymore.
  2. Sit down with pen and paper and write out the reasons why you are getting rid of those items. (ex. Were they ill-fitting? Are they too colorful? Did you only buy it because it was on sale?) These are the types of things to notice and mention! The more specific you can be, the better for you!
  3. From these notes, make a list of 3-5 things you are going to stay away from buying this season (ex. no more skinny jeans, or stay away from stripes, etc.).
  4. Then make a list of 3-5 goals you want to work towards in your wardrobe (ex. purchase straight leg jeans, or add in more prints).
  5. Finally, pick 2-3 descriptors for what you want your style to be generally (ex.” I want to experiment with whimsical and modern styling” or “I want to feel more feminine and fun”). Whether you use what you have to create these feelings and exercise these goals, or you purchase items within your new guidelines is up to you!

And that’s it – Finish it all in an hour or two at the most, and use your avenue of choice to pass along your items! (I use Poshmark or a local charity that is more involved in the community)

Now you can take your list of don’ts and your overall goals and use it as a guide for the upcoming season with focus and intention! YAY

**A little note here: 10 items is only a small start for many people, or if you’re like me 10 items might be a large chunk to take out of your wardrobe, but the goal here is to help encourage everyone that you can have intention with your style and purchases with just the smallest amount of time and effort!

Each season, I will be posting a picture of my pass-on’s and my list of don’ts/goals for my wardrobe on Instagram and on The Threads We Wear, and I hope you will join in with me! My desire is to build a community that supports each other to be thoughtful with their style in a way that is sustainable for our lives, and a community that cares about the impact our purchases have on the world around us!

Mark your Calendar for the next #trimmchallenge: Saturday, December 8th, 2018

  • 7 years of a setting sun kind of love in you. It’s constant, faithful, secure, but ever changing in color and depth✨. I love you forever and always @dmrouth
  • Happy Friday Friends.✨Looking forward to our first full weekend home since December, where we will finally be able to take down the Christmas tree☺️. I know everyone else is well into their resolutions for the new year, but since we have been gone so much, February feels like my January and I have fully embraced that! Sharing my vision for 2021 personally and for my blog very soon, so keep your peeps open.✨✨✨
  • A collection of unedited sunsets from our Christmas in SoCal that I can’t stop dreaming about.✨Spending more time lately being thankful for the little things that inspire me. It’s always the little things ☺️. #nofilter #gratitude #neverstopexploring
  • Hello friends happy Monday! I’M BACK! And I’ve dusted off the ol’ blogging fingers to share a more personal look at what 2020 was for me.☺️ . I went through so much growth this past year personally (didn’t we all), and worked through old struggles of fear, and self doubt that surfaced from old childhood trauma. But I have come out stronger and more resolved to be the person I was created to be. . Opening up about that and a snap shot of the highs and lows of this past year on the blog. Link in bio to read
  • Challenge Accepted.✨To my fellow woman, you are beautiful because of... The abuse you endured that you do not let define you. The disease or condition you developed that you do not let control you. The scars you have from childbirth that you choose to see as a souvenir. The times you chose a kind word over a tearing down comment. The times you looked at her with admiration and did not question your own worth. The times you gave your body the care it needed instead of pouring from an empty cup. For the all times you loved when it
  • Now more than ever it remains my heart to support brands who stand for something, whether that be their ethics (how they treat people), sustainability (how they treat the earth), or ways that they choose to honor both through giving. ✨ . With that said I am elated to share this beauty of a watch with you by @nordgreenofficial who believes in “good health, a clean environment, and full education as a right for all.” With every watch purchased they give either 2 months of clean drinking water to one person in The Central African Republic, 1 month of education
  • Love is the driving force that promotes the deepest change. Love is what brings unity. Love changes us more than simply knowing something and acting on it. When you love someone you do everything you can to protect that person, see them grow, see them thrive. @rachel.cargle said it best when she said “action without empathy is simply performance”, and I believe empathy’s roots are in love. So I am praying, praying for greater love in my heart, and in every heart, a love that would drive us all to true sustained change and action on behalf of Black lives.
